The film that RottenTomatoes' consensus stated 'sets a new standard for its franchise I'll accept the former, since the first two Thor movies weren't of the highest of standards to begin with.

But to say that it sets a new standard for the MCU, I find this concept laughable. The reason I say this is, because, quite frankly, this is Thor's take on Guardians of the Galaxy.

It takes place in another planet in, seemingly, another dimension. There's a wide cast of crazy characters, some of whom aren't human.

And they should do something more with them, even if it's something small like a webseries or something. Anyway, I don't compare this to Guardians in a derisive manner.

To be quite honest, I find it refreshing that this movie put fun first and foremost on the agenda. While, obviously, there are better movies in the MCU, this is one of the more consistently fun movies in their entire universe.

Having said that, however, this still fits very neatly within the type of movies that Marvel Studios allows their directors to make.

Visually and tonally speaking, the film is very different from the Thor people know but, really, everything else plays nicely into Marvel Studios' hands.

That's just the way it is. I know that that might sound like I'm "hating" on the movie, but it's not. Not to mention that I hate the term hater, which sort of implies that I can't have a valid opinion on something.

The point is that there's nothing here that deviates from the Marvel formula, a formula they've perfected throughout the years.

The problem with this formula, however, is that most movies end up coming across like police procedurals like Law and Order, where it features a different villain each week.

Marvel movies are kind of like that, where a villain is featured in one movie and then they move on to something else.

There's obviously more lingering baddies like Thanos which, again, the entirety of the MCU has been building to that showdown. But, because of that, the villains in the rest of the individual franchises within the MCU end up suffering.

And, really, that doesn't really change with this movie. Hela, Odin's firstborn daughter and right-hand, who was banished when her ambition to take over the world outside of the Nine Realms drove her mad with power.

There's an interesting story to tell there, particularly with how Odin built his empire on killing and destroying other societies. They explore some of that, for sure, but Hela is, really, kept in the backburner.

Hela, essentially, has finally been freed as a result of Odin's death and she wants her rightful place on the throne. Hela grows more powerful the more she's in Asgard.

She destroys Thor's hammer as if it was made of very a small block of ice. There's a few scenes where she's trying to find the key to the Bifrost, which is the sword Heimdall took But, again, she's not as much a focus of the narrative as you would expect given that, well, you know, she's the main villain of the film.

The majority of the film is Thor, Loki, Hulk and Scrapper the woman who brings Thor to the Grandmaster as a bounty, who also happened to be part of one Odin's elite warriors, the Valkyrie, all of whom were slain by Hela trying to find a way to escape Sakaar, a literal garbage planet run by the aforementioned Grandmaster.

The Grandmaster holds these gladiator fights and his champion is Hulk, which is how he meets up with Thor, and, of course, they proceed to have a fight.

One of the things you immediately notice about this film is the amount of humor on display. It's definitely a welcome change and having a director like Taika Waititi helps with that.

While he's not credited as one of the writers in the film, I'm certain he had a lot to contribute in terms of tone, a lot of the jokes and some of the casting decisions.

He also voices Korg. Like I mentioned, the narrative focuses on this motley crew leaving Sakaar, going back to Asgard and put a stop to Hela's reign of terror before she destroys everything Odin worked so hard to build.

This is where one of the movie's biggest 'deviations', if you could call it that, come into play.

Essentially, Thor has been having these dreams about Ragnarok and how he's meant to put a stop to them. Or so he believes.

Given that Hela grows stronger the more she's in Asgard, he surmises that, in fact, they weren't meant to stop Ragnarok, they were meant to cause it.

This is, in fact, the only way that they are able to stop Hela as once Surtur is summoned, a demon, he proceeds to destroy all of Asgard and, it's assumed, Hela along with it.

The reason I say it's a deviation is because it's a pretty big change from established Thor lore, at least in the cinematic universe.

This is the home of Thor and his people, whom he and his buddies saved by shoving them into this spaceship. I like this idea, and I doubt they'll actually do anything with it, of Thor and the rest of Asgard's citizens being nomads through space.

And I say I doubt they'll do anything with this since they have set a course for earth. Which, honestly, isn't as exciting as Asgard being a spaceship that travels through the cosmos.

This is the most exciting change an MCU flick has had in a while. Because, really, everything almost always is resolved by the end of the movie with a neat little bow.

In this case, though, it's not and Thor's journey with the rest of his people is just getting started. But still, I like that change and, again, I just hope they do more with it than just having Asgard already established at the start of the next Thor movie.

The casting, really, is tremendous. I think the movie being considerably lighter in tone than even, really, most of the rest of the MCU rubbed off on a lot of the cast.

Cause, really, Chris Hemsworth who's really talented just excels at the comedic side of Thor's character. Thor, as a character, hasn't always been the most interesting.

By that I mean that he's just a God, who deals with his trickster brother and saves the world from destruction. I felt that his personality, in the first film which, as I mentioned, I didn't like was the best representation.

He's just an arrogant God, who feels like his status as such should give him the authority to do what he wants.

Other than that, there hasn't been much to the character in terms of growth. That is, at least, until this movie. Where, again, Thor is far more comical but, at the same time, there's the underlying notion that Thor is not worthy to fill his father's lofty accomplishments as the king of Asgard.

And that, to me, is interesting. So I look forward to see how that is explored in future sequels, if there are any I mean. Tom Hiddleston is always great as Loki, so no complaints there.

Mark Ruffalo, in as limited a time as he's in here, does a very good job as well. Tessa Thompson is a great new addition to the franchise and I look forward to seeing more of her.

There's also a really fun cameo by Matt Damon, who acts as Loki in the play at the beginning of the movie, when Thor discover that Loki's been passing himself off as Odin while he sent Odin to an old folks' home on earth.

There's many things you can complain about this movie, but casting is not one of them. It also helps that the script is as strong as it is, the dialogue and the jokes are constant.

Some are misses, as is to be expected, but, by and large, the movie is very funny. As far as action is concerned, this movie is really exciting.

Perhaps not mind-blowing action, but I had a blast. And, really, that's the one thing that you can also definitively say about this movie. I just had a blast watching this.

If you're sick and tired of superhero movies then this really isn't gonna change your opinion. As far as how I would rate this movie. I honestly don't know, because it is a consistently entertaining movie from beginning to end, but I don't know if I ever felt that it was a great one.

There was just, to me, never that moment that made me think 'damn, this is a great movie' and, really, you need at least ONE of those moments.

Obviously helps if there's more, of course, but you need at least one of them. And there was never that one moment here. Maybe it's just me, but I still felt that this was a blast and a breath of fresh air for the franchise.

It's not a perfect movie, by any stretch, and it doesn't break free of the patented Marvel formula, but I had a lot of fun watching this movie.

Easy recommendation, particularly if you've got Netflix. Jesse O Super Reviewer. Dec 30, With a combination of poor special effects and a shortsighted plot, Thor: Ragnarok is a film that proves how Marvel are using illusive techniques to deceive their audiences into believing that the MCU films are durable.

Sean T Super Reviewer. Dec 19, The heavens shake as Thor fights for the survival of Asgard in Thor: Ragnarok. When Odin dies after being exiled to Earth his daughter Hela, the Goddess of Death, is released from her prison and returns to Asgard intent on conquering the nine realms, and when Thor and Loki stand up to her they're banished to a rogue world run by the Grandmaster, who forces Thor to fight in gladiatorial combat.

Cate Blanchett is quite good as the villain, as is Karl Urban as her henchman. However, Jeff Goldblum phones in his performance and seems incredibly out of place.

Method Studios provided over shots, including Thor's opening fight against Surtur in Muspelheim and Hela's fight against the Asgardian guards. D Negative worked on over shots, creating the environment for the planet Sakaar, including its junkyard landscape and wormholes, with the wormholes also created through a collaboration with Digital Domain.

ILM, who worked on previous incarnations of the Hulk, had to add much more detail to the character's facial features in Ragnarok due to the Hulk's increased dialogue.

ILM visual effects supervisor Chad Wiebe explained that Ruffalo's expressions were captured fresh for the film using Medusa, a performance capture technology.

With 90 different expressions captured, ILM "built an entirely new library that would allow [Hulk] to cover a full range of normal human visual characteristics.

In some instances when Thor and the Hulk interacted, a digital double was used for Thor, also created by ILM, to have greater flexibility for the shots.

ILM worked on all of the Hulk moments in the film outside the final fight sequence, which was completed by Framestore using ILM's assets, as Framestore was primarily responsible for rigging that sequence.

Framestore completed nearly shots, which featured digital doubles of Thor and Hela, Fenris, Korg, Miek, the giant Surtur at the end of the film, and over 9, buildings for Asgard, based on assets D Negative had from The Dark World , resulting in over character, vehicle, prop, and crowd rigs.

Rising Sun Pictures produced more than visual effects shots for Thor: Ragnarok. They worked on the Valkyrie flashback sequence, with the sequence's surreal ethereal appearance achieved through a combination of motion capture, computer graphics, a fps high-speed frame rate, and a special degree lighting rig containing strobe lights to bathe the scene in undulating patterns of light and shadow.

Rising Sun also helped create the various CGI aspects of Hela, such as her "hair wipe transition" to her horns, and her original introduction in New York City.

Following the reshoots, ImageEngine completed the new Norway introduction since Rising Sun was focused on the palace fight by then.

By August , Mark Mothersbaugh was hired to score the film. At the San Diego Comic-Con , a physical model of Hulk's gladiator armor was revealed, [] concept art and rough animatics were shown, [] and a " mockumentary " short titled Team Thor was screened.

The short was released online in August , [] and with the digital download of Captain America: Civil War the following month. On April 10, , the first teaser trailer was released.

Sandy Schaefer of Screen Rant felt it was "a strong start" for the film, having "a distinctly playful vibe" by setting it to "Immigrant Song".

Props and costumes from the film were on display at D23 Expo along with set pieces for photo opportunities. Exclusive clips were shown, along with a new trailer.

In August , Marvel partnered with car manufacturer Renault on a commercial supporting the release of the Kwid in Brazil.

Framestore worked on visual effects for the commercial, building on the foundation they had from working on the character in previous films.

They were also given the opportunity to demonstrate the project on Good Morning America. For the week of August 21, Ragnarok once again had the most social media conversations, according to comScore and its PreAct service.

Conor McGregor fight, helped generate the 57, new conversations for the week. The cast performed various scenes from the film live in low-budget costumes and with cardboard stage props.

The digital and Blu-ray releases include behind-the-scenes featurettes; audio commentary; deleted scenes; a blooper reel; and Team Darryl , a continuation of the "mockumentary" short films Team Thor and Team Thor: Part 2 , in which the Grandmaster moves in with Darryl after Thor leaves.

James Gunn , writer and director of the Guardians films, clarified that Yondu was never meant to appear in the final film, and that Rooker was on a nearby set recording material for the Halloween variant of the theme park attraction Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout!

Brazil also had the third-best debut for an MCU film, while New Zealand's opening was the biggest of It also remained at number one in many existing markets.

The website's critical consensus reads, "Exciting, funny, and above all fun, Thor: Ragnarok is a colorful cosmic adventure that sets a new standard for its franchise—and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter praised Waititi's handling of "the clash-of-worlds CGI extravaganza", particularly for the lighter tone he brought, with "even the story's central bad guys [being] silly fun, hammed to the hilt by Cate Blanchett and Jeff Goldblum.

Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times similarly praised the film, calling the performances of the ensemble cast "outstanding" and Waititi's direction "goofy and campy and marvelously self-referential".

He also said the soundtrack that was used in the climactic battle sequence, particularly Led Zeppelin 's " Immigrant Song " as being "perfectly synced".

He also noted a similar directing style of Waititi to Edgar Wright 's "parodic work" and labelled the film as "unusually lively and buoyant" while acknowledging the effect of a "Marvel Fatigue factor" towards the audiences.

Peter Debruge of Variety called the movie "preposterous", but praised Goldblum's performance. Waititi's truest achievement here.

Some critics claim that Thor: Ragnarok conceals sophisticated commentary under its comedic presentation, specifically on themes of colonial history and indigenous people.

By the release of Ragnarok , Waititi and Marvel had discussed a spin-off Marvel One-Shot short film following the characters Korg and Miek, but it was unfeasible due to Marvel's commitment to producing three feature films a year.

Feige said Marvel still had plans for those characters, but did not specify. By April , Thompson believed that a pitch had been made for a sequel to Ragnarok that involved Waititi returning.
